Review: So much has been written and said about the taxi driver who seems almost superfluous to say anything more. But look again the other night I had the time, and every time I've seen this movie surprised how perfect it is. It is so powerful and disturbing now as it was twenty-five years. It's not just age, it becomes more and more relevant every year. It is without doubt a modern classic, and one of the truly great, timeless movies.Scorsese few and Schrader went on to make other great films, then on their own (King Of Comedy, Light Sleeper), and total (Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ), but this is easily the best film of his career. And Robert De NIROS too. He was still top his best performance here as a deeply disturbed and alienated Vietnam veteran Travis Bickle, and the cabbie is killer. This character is not surprising film legend included. De Niro Scorsese surrounded by first-rate supporting cast, including a small but effective role of Harvey Keitel (Reservoir Dogs), Peter Boyle (Hardcore) underrated Victor Argo (King of New York) and Joe Spinelli (Maniac). Albert Brooks and Jodie Foster is also very good, and even Cybil Shepherd, the butt of many jokes, is as good as Bickle of obsession. When you combine these players Schrader excellent script, and Scorsese's brilliant direction, with stunning cinematography (Michael Chapman) and results Haunting (Bernard Herrmann Hitchcock fave final effort), you have yourself a truly memorable cinematic experience. If you havent seen the taxi driver, I urge you to do so immediately. It is a masterpiece, pure and simple.
